Telecoms the driver for a competitive economy

The rapid build out of mobile, satellite and fibre optics networks is changing the economic landscape of Myanmar, as the country benefits from new and increasingly competitive services.

With Myanmar’s GDP growth predicted to reach 8.3% in 2017, according to the Asian Development Bank, the focus on improving infrastructure is key to attracting both domestic and international investment; ongoing investment in the telecoms sector continues to be a major catalyst. According to the GSMA, a doubling of mobile data use leads to an increase in the GDP per capita growth rate of 0.5 percentage points

The CommuniCast Myanmar show returns for the third consecutive year from 6-8 December and mirrors the fast changing landscape. The show focuses on satellite, fibre optics, enterprise solutions and business to business services, with more than 70 participating companies and sponsors.

Several Myanmar companies will be exhibiting for the first time, including data services provider KBZ Gateway and cloud computing company Myint. A first time International pavilion from Vietnam is most timely with the anticipated fourth mobile licence launch expected to be imminent. Huawei will be a first time participant as well as Platinum Sponsor.

U Thein Soe Htaik, Assistant General Manager of exhibitor Myint & Associates Telecommunications, said: “Following the success of previous editions of CommuniCast Myanmar, M&ATel is very happy to exhibit at this year’s event. It is crucial to share and showcase the importance of data centre facilities and services in Myanmar’s thriving IT sector and exhibiting at the event provides great opportunities to conduct business with Asia’s leading companies.”

Pavilions from India, Singapore and Thailand will be returning to the show, as will the leading operator, MPT. Koichi Kawase, Chief Commercial Officer of MPT-KSGM Joint Operations, said: “MPT is looking forward to participating in CommuniCast which provides an opportunity to connect with partners in the telecommunications industry. We will be showcasing our business to business (B2B)services in particular, as well as our diverse range of solutions available to individual customers.”

The show is a key event for the telecoms industry in South East Asia – with more than 75% of companies exhibiting returning to the show for at least the second time. This year’s event comes at a time when the telecoms industry in the region is going through an era of unprecedented growth, with more than 80% of the country now having mobile coverage.
